How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You

"How sweet it is to be loved by you
How sweet it is to be loved by you
I needed the shelter of someone's arms
There you were
I needed someone to understand my ups and downs
There you were
With sweet love and devotion
Deeply touching my emotion
I want to stop, and thank you baby
I want to stop, and thank you baby
Yes I do
How sweet it is to be loved by you
Feels so fine
How sweet it is to be loved by you"
-James Taylor
For the most recent Wedding Shower I gave I chose the theme "How Sweet It is to be Loved By You". The title itself made the song just SWEET enough to host a simple shower with a yummy dessert bar!
The tutorial for making a banner like these can be found here!
We served a variety of SWEETS and candy and paired them with a collection of the brides wedding colors and theme. :) These inexpensive centerpieces were made using tin cans, paint, burlap, ribbon & hot glue. We preferred the look of using multiple designs with matching colors and embellishments. Each centerpiece was unique but they were all very similar.

Not So Normal Things About Me

How To Throw A Magical Harry Potter Themed Party

I don't know about you... but in my opinion the Harry Potter series is pretty fantastic. Although some may very well disagree I have never been so drawn in by any other work of literature.. (and that is coming from someone who LOVES to read.) The fact that I love Harry Potter, Hogwarts and the whole magical world paired with the fact that I love throwing parties was bound to collide at some point...

Enjoy the result!!

1. DETAILS, DETAILS, DETAILS!!!
One of the greatest things about the masterpieces of J.K. Rowling is her attention to detail. You are never left without a detail to imagine. When you read the Harry Potter books you almost feel as if you have stepped in to Hogwarts yourself and so that is exactly how we wanted our party to feel!

We took advantage of every opportunity to make a sign, add a picture or make a decoration that would stand out. Even the bathrooms were labeled with "Witches & Wizards". Do your research!! There are so many ways to bring your party to life!
These house crests were made from various colors of card stock.

2. Make it believable.
As I said before.. these books make you feel like you're actually a student at Hogwarts and so should your party! Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is so richly explained that it's easy to think of things that will make your party stand out. When your guests walk in you want them in overload with all there is to see.. Keep the magic coming!

Our tables were decorate to symbolize each Hogwarts house and we created a small version of Hogsmeade in another room. The Living Room became The Dursley residence so that no place outside of Hogwarts was forgotten either.

3. Magical Games and Props!

What is Hogwarts without wands? A rousing game of party style Quidditch? Houses to be divided into and an actual Sorting Hat?

This one showen here was made from three simple things...
-a plastic oudoor gardening pot
-burlap
-hot glue!
First I cut and attached the run around the base of the pot and I follwed that wit adding messy layers of burlap until I reached the top. The pointed section of the hat was made by wrapping a length of burlap in a cone shape and attaching it to the top of the pot. Lastly, I added a few patches for detail.
Guests were sorted into houses as they arrived and throughout the evening we played other games and each house formed a team!
We sorted the guests by painting the tip of each wand a house color. When they selected a wand they were placed into their Hogwarts house.

4. Photo Ops.
What better souvenir for your guests then having them put themselves right in the middle of the magic. Leave plenty of room for guests to gather and take pictures and throw in a few photo props, frames and backdrops that set the scene.

5. Costumes.
Everyone needs a costume! A Rowling gives us SO MANY choices in her amazing books! Get creative!

Bride or Groom Q & A Game

The shoe game is a great game for breaking the ice and a fun way to keep everyone laughing and entertained. Sit the happy couple back to back, each in a chair and have them each take one of each of their shoes. All questions asked of them can be answered by choosing "bride or groom". We chose to create the questions on strips of paper before hand and we passed them around the room for other people to ask them, one by one.

Here are some fun example questions:
1. Who is the better cook?
2. Who kills the bugs?
3. Who is funniest?
4. Who is messiest?
5. Who is most likely to clean the most?
6. Who is the better dancer?
7. Who is the better singer?
8. Who is most likely to get lost?
9. Who is smartest?
10. Who is always right?
11. Who knows more song lyrics?
12. Who has the most bad habits?
13. Who takes out the trash?
14. Who is the better driver?

Get creative and make some of the questions specific to the couple. :)
Make the very last question something that creates a reaction from the audience such as...
Who do you love the very most?
Have fun!! :) You may also be interested in:

How To Make Simple Flag Banners

Step 1: Choose a set of colors that match your event and theme.
Step 2: Decide if you want to add any other elements to your banner, such as the PB & J cutouts here.
Step 3. Cut triangle flags from the colors you have chosen. Card stock works best and is more sturdy but any kind of paper will work as long as you handle the banner carefully.
Step 4. Once you have all pieces of your banner cut out punch a hole in the top two corners of each flag.
Step 5. Find a large open area and arrange the flags and other elements. This obviously varies depending on the number of colors or patterns.
Step 6. Measure your twine across the set up of flags. Leave about 4 inches of extra twine on each end of the banner.
Step 7. String the flags together one by one. Start on the underside of the first flag and bring it up through the top.
Step 8. Loop the twine over the top of the flag and back down through the second hole.
Step 9. Continue this pattern as if you are sewing each flag onto the banner.

Now you're done! :) Banners can be easily hung with tape or tied with the extra twine and adjusted to fit your area.

To store fold each flag onto the next and store the banner so it won't bend and reuse the banner as often as you like. :) You may also be interested in:

Simple Ways To Make Everything Match Your Theme

These frames had art in them that didn't quite match the theme we had in mind. We were using a rented venue and they were much too large to remove from the wall and hide somewhere else.. so we improvised!! :)

We measured and cut tan butcher paper to fit the size of the glass in frame and attached it with scotch tape. The polka dot square in the middle is made from a cut out of wrapping paper we had purchased to use for the party. So simple.. so cheap.. but so cute! :) And suddenly this art that stuck out like a sore thumb went right along with our party theme! :)

Some more fun ideas for making things match!! :)

1. Roll silverware in a paper dinner napkin of a matching color and tie with twine or ribbon that corresponds with the style of your party.
2. Use a mix of serving dishes, platters, bowls and baskets and tie them all together by using ribbons, flowers, matching tulle or other elements throughout.
3. Stick with a maximum of 3 colors in the majority of your decorations. Too many colors start to make things look unorganized.
4. Stay cheap and hit up your local dollar tree for party elements at a low price. My favorite are the plastic table cloths they sell ($1 each). you can use them for so many things and you can't beat the price!
Make this plastic table cloth curtain for your next party! :) 1. Completely unfold the table cloth 2. Attach one end of the tablecloth to the top of a doorway or window as shown above with scotch tape. 3. Cut a straight line up the middle of the hanging table cloth. 4. Gather each side, one at a time and tie with twine. 5. You may want to attach sides with tape to secure but this is optional.
5. Add touches of things like streamers, balloons, etc to make a color pop.

They Go Together Like PB & J: Wedding Shower

We had so much fun putting together this wedding shower for some close friends of ours that are soon to be married! :) We went with the theme..

"They Go Together like PB & J"
We used a mix of purple & tan, burlap, twine and mason jars to pull off this look and it turned out so cute! :)

We painted mason jars with craft paint and replaced the metal top with burlap. Then we stuck purple flowers in the jars through the holes in the burlap and used them as centerpieces. (Click here for a tutorial of the painted jars.)

We took the theme as far as it could go and also served a picnic style food buffet. The buffet consisted of bagged sandwiches, apple sauce & fruit cups, bagged chips, veggies, mac and cheese and potato salad. We used mini disposable sauce cups for things like mayo & mustard for sandwiches and ranch for veggies.
We make white cupcakes, half with caramel icing and half with white chocolate raspberry icing to keep the colors matching :) So yummy and so cute! :)
